chapbook is usually a small poetry publication up to about 40 pages, sometimes bound with a saddle stitch. Historically small printed booklet that was a popular medium for street, popular or folk l literature throughout early modern Europe. The modern chapbook can be traced back to the American Beat poets of the 1950s and 60s — eg., Allan Ginsberg’s Howl.

When used for present-day publications in photography chapbooks are commonly short, inexpensive booklets with the photos connected by a thematic or formal link. They are a medium for alternative and emerging photographers, writers and publishers.
