side projects

I walked on my own as I wanted some time and space for photography. I figured the side of the gorge would provide some open shade and thereby allow me to avoid the contrasty light during the day.

I walked along the creek bed past the defunct gauging station then walked along a trail up the the gorge walls to explore the Terrapinna Tors.

Terrapinna Tors

Silly me. I had no maps or compass with me. I treated it as a photographic stroll. Consequently I ended up becoming lost on the Terrrapinna Tors. When I did return to the main Hamilton creek I couldn’t find my way back to the Terrapinna waterhole at the head of the gorge. I became lost in the side creeks. Everything looked different on the return walk.

It took me ages to overcome my panic and anxiety of being lost, to recover my sense of direction, and to make my way back down the gorge.

This side project started with a road trip to Lajamanu in 2017. Then I remembered I had made a road trip to Andamooka in 2010. These inspired me to do a camel trek in 2018 as I realised that the only way to see the Far North of South Australia was to walk it. So this side project is constructed from bits and piece held together by a free Word Press blog without a unifying theme, apart from the idea of the long road to the north: as a project it is provisional, unclear and emergent. Hopefully, the theme or concept will emerge latter.

Now we are planning to do a walk in the Gammon Ranges in August 2021 as well as a 14 day camel trek from Blinman to Lake Frome in June 2021.
